Who you will deal with

I have been building software professionally since 2018. I studied Computer Science at Newcastle University (BSc Hons, 2014 to 2017).

My early work was in small teams building the kind of systems small businesses need: rota scheduling, timekeeping, geolocation and a Xero payroll integration at Rydiam Saigon (2018 to 2019), then agency work at Wubbleyou (2019 to 2020), dealing directly with clients across web, mobile and cloud.

From 2020 I worked on larger products: real-time online car configurators for Cadillac and Lucid Motors at ZeroLight (2020 to 2022); enterprise data-protection and cyber-resilience software at Hitachi (2022 to 2024), where I modernised a legacy front end and pushed for automated testing; and HMRC digital services for Borders and International Trade on a contract with Accenture (2024).

Since late 2024 I have been a senior engineer and then technical lead on an analytics product, leading seven developers across three teams while still writing production code every day, including the unglamorous parts: authentication, single sign-on, permissions, billing and secure data access.

I work in TypeScript, React, Node.js, C# and PostgreSQL on cloud infrastructure, and have spent as much time on testing, release pipelines and security as on screens.

My full CV is on my personal site, anthonydowds.com.

How the company works

British Software Company is a trading name of Dowco Ltd, a UK private limited company. It is deliberately a one-engineer firm. You speak to Anthony, he writes the proposal, builds the system and supports it. That is possible because every build sits on a platform we maintain, and because we use modern development tools well. It is also why we are honest about size: if your project needs a team of ten, we will tell you.

Read how a build runs, start to finish

Why one person is a feature, not a risk

  • No hand-offs

The person who heard the problem is the person who builds the fix. Nothing is lost between a salesperson, a project manager and a developer.

  • Written down, not remembered

Every system comes with a handover pack: how it is hosted, how to deploy it, where the backups are. Another engineer could pick it up.

  • Cover when it matters

Every system is built on version-controlled code with a written handover pack (how it is hosted, how to deploy it, where the backups are), so another engineer could take it on; monitoring and backups run automatically whether or not anyone is at a desk.

What we believe about this work

Written down beats remembered.

The people on the floor decide whether a system works.

Small, finished and used beats big, planned and abandoned.

You should be able to leave. Your data is yours and the handover pack exists from day one.

What you will not find here

  • Stock photos of a team we do not have.
  • Testimonials, until a client has given one in writing.
  • Client logos, until we have permission to show them.
  • Project counters, star ratings or ‘trusted by’ lines.
  • Any claim we cannot back with a document.

What we do show is worked examples of what a first build looks like, sector by sector.
